You've made an investment in your mower and want to make it last. The team at Ferris has created the ultimate lawn mower fuel guide with maintenance tips to ensure that your mower delivers peak performance season after season.
Our mowers are engineered for durability but regular maintenance is key to ensuring they operate at their best. Here are some tips to help keep your mower operating like it did when it was brand new.
1. Fuel Your Mower Correctly
- Use gasoline that has an ethanol content of no more than 10% (E10).
- When retiring mowers for the season, use a fuel stabilizer to prevent water and gasoline from separating (effective for 6-12 months).
- Store fuel in high-quality containers and away from direct sunlight.
2. Properly Store Your Mower
- Leaving mowers outdoors (even overnight) can cause premature wear such as rusting.
- Store mowers in garages, barns, sheds, or any dry shelter to give machines a longer shelf life and save on repair costs.
3. Maintain Proper Tire Pressure
- This will help prolong your mower's life and it also prevents uneven cutting.
4. Clean Mower Decks
- Leaving grass clippings and mulched leaves on top of the deck will create a buildup which can rust out the deck and put wear and tear on the unit and belts.
5. Tune Your Mower
- For landscapers running equipment for up to 12 hours per day, tune your mowers (as followed by operators manual) to prevent clogged air filters.
6. Sharpen Blades
- For precise cutting, clean and sharpen your blades carefully and regularly.
7. Spindles and Castor Wheels
- Grease these monthly to keep the interior parts moving like they're supposed to, especially for commercial mowers and landscapers who put hundreds of hours on their units.
8. Regular Oil Changes
- To ensure you are adding the correct type and amount of oil to your mower, reference the Briggs & Stratton Oil Guide.
- Do not use special additives. Make sure to use high quality detergent oils such as "For Service SF, SG, SH, SJ" or higher.
- You can also use synthetic oils which are acceptable at all temperatures.
You’ve already demonstrated a passion for and commitment to excellence in lawn care by opting for a Ferris mower. Make sure you give it the care it needs to keep running at its best and you’ll be able to count on it season after season.
